Making equalities central to your union practice

8 December 2025 9:30am–3:00pm

Online via Teams

Equality is written into our rules and policies. But making equality part of everyday business is no small task.

This course explores internal and external tools, which can support equality bargaining, negotiating, and representation.

It also looks at how to identify equality themes in organising and recruitment, as well as considering the different equality roles in UNISON and how you can utilise their support.

Following a decision of national delegate conference, all reps and branch officers are expected to undertake this training within two years of being appointed.

This course is only for branches covered by UNISON’s Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire team. If you’re in another branch, please ask your branch secretary about training.

What will the course cover?

The aims of this course are:

  • To understand equality in UNISON
  • To introduce equality legislation and how you can use it in your role as a UNISON activist
  • To make equality central to your union practice
  • To find out more about UNISON’s equality campaigns
  • To look at how you can contribute to your branch equality action plan

Can I get time off to learn?

Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.

Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.
