Strong branches are organised branches. It may seem obvious, but it’s hard to achieve.
UNISON’s Organising to Win strategy is already helping, bringing greater strategy and focus to some big campaigns. But while progress has been made and is paying dividends, there is more we can do to embed an organising approach in everyday branch life.
UNISON has put together a short course, Organising to Win in your branch, for regional staff to facilitate at branch committees.
This course, taking place at the activist summer school, is for branch secretaries to get familiar with the course so they can help deliver it in their branches and lead the charge to a more organising approach.
This course is for branch secretaries. If you have taken part in an earlier version of the Organising to Win in your branch training, you don’t need to apply.
What will the course help me to do?
The course will help you to
- Develop a broad understanding of what is needed for branches to do more organising,
- Understand the key factors in determining the strength of a UNISON branch,
- Identify the obstacles unions face and how to overcome them,
- Understand how to implement an organising strategy in your branch.
Can I get time off to learn?
Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.
Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.
If you are not in a recognised workplace, please contact your branch for advice.
How much is the course?
There is a charge of £50. Your branch will fund this cost and they will be invoiced once you have completed the course.
Please note there may be a charge for no-shows or cancellations giving less than 48 hours notice.
