UNISON’s reps training is a fantastic introduction to becoming a workplace steward.

But there’s so much it’s hard to cram it into one week, and you may still lack a bit of confidence when it comes to representing members.

Sounds like you? Then get yourself along to the activist summer school for this superb two-day course on representing members at work, with the chance to get some more practice and gain some more confidence.

Check out the full programme for the Activist Summer School.

What will the course help me to do?

The course will look at:

  • Process for identifying needs and exploring what is and isn’t a case
  • Recap on sources of information, especially the ACAS code
  • Preparing for a grievance and a capability case
  • Planning and building a case including interviewing witnesses
  • Possible outcomes from cases
  • Building confidence, getting organised and looking after yourself.

Can I get time off to learn?

Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.

Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.

How much is the course?

There is a charge of £100. Your branch will fund this cost and they will be invoiced once you have completed the course.

Please note there may be a charge for no-shows or cancellations giving less than 48 hours notice.
