20 January 2016 10:30am–3:30pm
UNISON Centre, 130 Euston Road, London, NW1 2AY
This unique event will be the first opportunity student nurses, midwives, operating department practitioners, occupational therapists and paramedics from across the UK will have to come together. Organised by UNISON, it will be opportunity for students to come together, to share concerns and listen to keynote speakers – and shape the campaign to defend the NHS bursary. The government plans scrap it in 2017 and force NHS students in England to take out loans and pay for their own tuition fees, while working for free in the NHS. The result of this will be students will graduate in 2020, having worked 2,300 hours caring for patients in clinical placements with a debt of £51,600 and on a salary of just £22,799. They will never be able to pay it off and UNISON believes it risks an exodus of new graduates to other parts of the world, as there is an international shortage of nurses.
