8 – 10 December 2025
UNISON Eastern, Higdon House, Kempson Way, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP32 7AR
Member learning and activist courses are brilliant organising tools, helping us get a foot in the door to talk to staff about UNISON.
This introductory course is perfect for experienced activists who want to use education methods to run organising-focused training for members and activists.
You will need to complete both this course and the UNISON ‘Equalities for Tutors’ course to become a full UNISON lay tutor.
The course runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day.
What will the course help me to do?
On completing this course you will understand:
- Teaching and learning approaches appropriate for trade union education,
- How to run a group-based activity,
- How equality and diversity issues relate to learners’ needs in an educational setting,
- How learners benefit from a group learning process,
- How tutoring knowledge and skills can engage branch activists around union organising,
- How to develop your tutoring skills and knowledge.
Can I get time off to learn?
Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.
Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.
How much is the course?
There is a charge of £150. Your branch will fund this cost and they will be invoiced once you have completed the course.
Please note there may be a charge for no-shows or cancellations giving less than 48 hours notice.
