Making waves in Bedford

UNISON Eastern Black members made a splash at the Bedford River Festival in July, proudly representing the union over the two-day event, writes Firdos Finch.

Clad in eye-catching rainbow attire to celebrate Year of LGBT+ Workers, 17 members of the Black members group ran a recruitment stall over the weekend, aided by a couple of local activists and regional staff.

UNISON’s  rainbow team connected with many of the 300,000 people who flowed through the council-backed community event, recruiting new members and encouraging current members to understand the importance of being active in UNISON and getting our cause heard far and wide.

We recruited 16 new members, persuaded 10 people to get involved in the self-organised group, signed up a prospective new steward and set someone on the path to becoming a young members’ officer in their branch.

It was a wonderful experience and we were an astounding success — working together, not only making ourselves  seen, but also heard.
