Phlebotomists celebrate £2,000 pay rise

ENHT phlebotomists hold UNISON flags

Phlebotomists in East and North Herts hospitals have won a £2,000 a year pay rise, after successfully arguing that their jobs should be upbanded.

The workers, who collect blood samples from patients at the Lister, New QEII and Hertford County hospitals, as well as local GP practices, came together in UNISON to move up to band 3 of the Agenda for Change pay scales.

UNISON says the workers had been on the lowest salary band of the NHS, despite their skills, knowledge and daily tasks warranting the next band up. The error meant the phlebotomists were losing out on around £1 per hour, says the union.

Phlebotomist Rejoice Martey said: “All of us at East and North Herts are delighted to have won this rebanding campaign.

“We do skilled clinical jobs and deserve the pay and recognition of band 3.

“Hopefully this will show other NHS trusts that they should be paying phlebotomists fairly as well.”
