Celebrating Pride at the Norfolk and Norwich

The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital celebrated its first Pride event this week. The LGBT+ self-organised group’s Sophie Slater reports

UNISON’s Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals branch LGBT+ group wanted to create an opportunity for staff, patients and visitors to come together to celebrate what makes us all unique.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling in April weighing heavily on our community, it was important for us to create a space to show support for our colleagues and patients.

Alex Porter, regional manager at UNISON Eastern, opened the event with a speech on the history of Pride and reflected on the importance of standing with our trans siblings during these uncertain times.

People visit stalls at the event

A huge thank you to all our stall holders — Oasis Norfolk, LGBTQ+ Project, UNISON, Serco, Norwich Pride, NNUH Wellbeing, NBI LGBTQ+ Working Group, NNUH LGBT+ Staff Network, Hawk & Heather Jewellery, Maternity & Neonatal Voices Partnership and Patient Experience — for providing information, giveaways and interactive activities.

We’re also grateful to the NNUH Charity for providing refreshments, which were greatly appreciated on the day.

Our next event is already in the works: a panel discussion on being LGBTQ+ in the workplace taking place on Tuesday 9 September, 12.30-1.30pm at The Benjamin Gooch Lecture Theatre.
