Assertiveness for young workers

Online

We are pleased to offer a dedicated training course for all young workers to help them be more assertive.

Young workers may be particularly vulnerable to things like, bullying, harassment, negligence by their employer and physical and emotional stress.

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for all young members, activists and reps aged 29 or under in UNISON Eastern region. The course has been commissioned and paid for by the Eastern region young members committee.

This training course will focus on

  • What it means to be a young worker,
  • The meaning of assertive, passive and aggressive behaviour,
  • How to become more aware of differing behavioural styles,
  • How to develop a more assertive approach to a range of situations,
  • How to feel more confident as a young member in the union.

Can I get time off to learn?

Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.

Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.

Online learning is not an alternative to paid release from work. The law still applies, whether learning takes place away from work or in work, at a workstation or in a company learning centre.

If you’re having difficulty accessing paid time off please contact your local branch.
