Online

Many reps and members have heard the phrase “UNISON College”, or seen it mentioned in course materials, emails or on the website.  But what is the UNISON College?

This short webinar will talk you through everything you need to know, including:

  • What training and development opportunities are there for activists?
  • What are the 700+ free online courses that members can sign up to?
  • Can you really get qualifications for free in courses ranging from cat grooming to accounting to crime writing to creating an online business?
  • How do members access funding for learning for things like degrees or course books?
  • How can UNISON members access the free, personalised, careers advice service?
  • How can we use member learning to build the union?

Join the webinar and all will be revealed.

Can I get time off to learn?

Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.

Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.

Online learning is not an alternative to paid release from work. The law still applies, whether learning takes place away from work or in work, at a workstation or in a company learning centre.

If you’re having difficulty accessing paid time off please contact your local branch.
