A new year brings new challenges, such as the former EDL leader seeking to return to street politics with the launch of Pegida in the UK. And it brings new opportunities. But it also brings the same old myths and lazy rhetoric about migrant workers, and the acute dangers posed by politics based on race hatred and bigotry. Our response as trade unionists is to get organised and be firmly rooted in our communities, and to lead, rather than reacting to our enemies’ corrosive tactics.
That is why SERTUC is working with anti-racist/anti-fascist campaign group, HOPE not Hate, to put on a series of training days for trade unionists and community activists who are interested in getting more organised in their communities to oppose the politics of hatred and to work collectively to champion the benefits of multi-racial communities.
There is no charge for attending. Lunch will be provided. Places are limited. You can register to attend at http://goo.gl/forms/TX3K9LYXE1
The training will be provided by HOPE not Hate. Participants will not be lectured to for four hours, the programme will be ‘smart’ and dynamic. Outcomes for the day include:
- Identifying the nature of the challenges we face,
- Exploring the resources in our community that can be marshalled for hope,
- Making specific plans to build hope and isolate hate within our communities.
And the aim is to inspire and enable our communities to stand up against prejudice, and organise for equality and opportunity for all.
