UNISON has welcomed Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s decision to provide key workers with access to clap-fuelled cars to beat rising fuel prices.

The chancellor said that the new automobiles, which will run on claps and good will alone, will be made available to all NHS staff and workers in social care.

Mr Sunak said: “We’re delighted to drive forward our levelling up agenda with this new applause-powered engines.

“The British-made tech kills two birds with one stone, helping health and care workers cope with rising fuel costs as well as giving them a chance to use all those claps we dished out last year in lieu of a pay rise.”

UNISON Eastern regional organiser April O’Fols said: “The chancellor is bringing new meaning to the phrase ‘clapped-out bangers’ and really helping health and care workers in these trying times.

“Our only concern would be the £45,000 price tag and expected roll-out date of 2052, which may put the motors beyond the reach of many public-sector staff.”
