Law course: contracts of employment

15 August 2022

Higdon House, Kempson Way, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 7AR

As part of our 2022 Activist Summer School, we’re running a one-day law course on employment contracts.

What will the course help me to do?

  • Learn how to imply contract terms where no express term exists;
  • get an initial idea as to the sort of behaviour by an employer which may amount to a fundamental breach of implied term of trust and confidence;
  • become familiar with how a typical contract may look;
  • gain an appreciation of the fact that sometimes what appears to be a change of contract is in fact within the contract;
  • learn how discrimination law may help when employee contractual terms are changed.

Can I get time off to learn?

Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.

Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.
