As part of our 2022 Activist Summer School, we’re running a one-day law course on work-life balance.
What will the course help me to do?
- Identify what kind of reasons and evidence for dismissal may be related to pregnancy;
- consider ways in which the statutory minimum requirements of parental leave can be improved;
- understand what situations may be covered by the statutory right to take dependant leave and how these can be improved on with employers;
- understand how some kinds of request for flexible working may amount to indirect sex discrimination and whether refusal can be justified by an employer.
Can I get time off to learn?
Yes, if you are in a recognised workplace the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the 1997 Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations give you the right to time off with pay to attend trade union courses. You just have to give your employer reasonable notice.
Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice.
